Summary

The Maremma archaeological tour will take you in the heart of Maremma to discover the land of the Etruscans, for a guided tour of two days especially focused on “wine and archaeology”, but also on food and nature, hot baths at the spring of Saturnia and local gastronomy, with its  association of pleasure and conviviality. Our expert archaeologist will lead you to discover the  history of the ancient etrusco -roman city of Vulci, with its temples, basilicas and private buildings; you will learn also the ancient etrusco- Roman  wine making techniques and practices; at lunch you’ll taste the traditional flavours of Maremma at Casale dell`Osteria, a typical Tuscany style building : the appetizing  boar cold cuts,  the soups  which  in  their simple ingredients recall the   frugal meals  of  the  “butteri”  ( tames horses) , the typical “ cacio” maremmano”,  tasty   sheep cheese, which should be  accompanied by  a robust red wine of Sovana or a  “Morellino of Scansano” and the local biscuits  dunked  in  the popular  “holy  wine” ( “ vin santo”) of the Etruscan land. In the evening you will learn the religious and symbolic meaning of the “symposium” (banquet of wine) rituality  among the Etruscans by visiting the extraordinary  archaeological collection  housed in the Antiquarium of Castello della Badia. Following the route of sangiovese wine through magnificent wine-growing areas,  we will  finally reach “Le Chiuse Farm House” an enchanting farm house immersed  in the unspoiled Maremma countryside. The old Tuscan stone farm house  is waiting for us  to enjoy dinner together in the sign of pleasure and conviviality!. The rediscovery of the ancient culinary Maremma tradition will be the base of our dinner prepared  samples of dishes that have been forgotten and  are now being replicated in their original and simple recipes. The next day you will  enjoy  moments of pure relaxation and free time swimming in the beautiful natural thermal hot spring oasis of Saturnia and explore the  enchanting  medieval village of Pitigliano carved in the tufa rock.  The magnificent village of etruscan orign  has actually been known throughout history as “The little Jerusalem” for the active Jewish community that has been settled here  since the 15th century and the beautiful synagoge that is the centre of the jewish community untill today. Many jewels of Renaissance art are hidden in the alleys of the village, such as the recently restored  Orsini  Palace and the beautiful Medici acqueduct. We will visit the Museum of Jewish Culture, the Synagogue and, through an intriguing pathway, the oven where unleavened bread was baked. We will visit then the Orsini Palace, an impressive Aldobrandesque building. Restored by the Orsini between the 15th and 16th centuries,  today houses the extrardinary  Palazzo Orsini Museum and the Civic Etruscan archaeological museum .
