Neighborhood

The home of Roman Wonders is located in one of the oldest distric of Rome, the Coelian hill. The history of the Coelian hill originates in a very remote time dating back to the period of the Etruscan kings. The name “Caelius “derives from that of the Etruscan king Caelius Vibenna , one of the leaders of Vulci with whose help the sixth king of Rome , Servio Tullio would have occupied the Coelian hill . The oldest name of the district , however, was that of “mons Querquetulanus”, mount of the oaks for the presence of an ancient forest of oaks sacred to Juppiter. Recent archaeological excavation on the Coelian hill have demonstrated that in Roman times the district was crowded with private houses ( insulae) and from the Imperial times became the privileged residence of the noble patrician families of Rome with luxurious residences rich in frescoes , marbles and mosaics. A forest of Christian Churches sprang up over the ruins of the luxurious Roman houses so that today the Coelian district is one of the district of Rome that boasts the largest number of churches mostly of medieval age. Among the most important churches of the district there is the Church of Saint Clement built over a Roman domus of the I senctury A.D. and a mytreum , the Church of Santi Quattro Coronati that was a fortress Church as protection of the Pope from attacks of the Normans, the Church of Santo Stefano Rotondo with it’s unique circular shape constructed above a mytreum , the Church of Santa Maria in Domnica, and finally the Church of Santi Giovanni and Paolo under which is hidden the precious treasure of a patrician domus of the 4th century A.D. which preserves splendid frescoes , mosaics and architectures. Your holiday at home of Roman wonders will be therefore a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating Coelian district, a true open air museum. The Coelian neighboroods are also full of excellent restaurants, pizzerias , pubs and caffè and there is a delicious open air market where you can find fresh and genuine local products for your cuisine.

What else? The archaeological central area of Rome the imperial forums and the Colosseum , the Roman Forum is located just 5 minutes walking distance from the house, the Colosseum Metro Station less then 500 meters and the main Rome Termini Train Station, 30 minutes walk from home.
